Student Voice
Student Voice plays a vital role within the Brockhill community. It helps us the student body to develop a voice; it also helps us to have an informed view of our education. This in turn helps us to become more engaged and motivated in our learning.
Our principal Mr. Lyng said “The way the college works is by developing students into active learners, and you can’t be an active learner if you haven’t got a voice; so you have got to be able to have a two way conversation with your teacher. You have got to be able to use metacognitive processes (and that’s learning about thinking.) That’s where I think student voice starts.”
Currently we have 110 students working on student voice projects within the college. Some of these projects consist of peer support groups, focus groups on subjects such as the environment, academic learning groups; these groups concentrate on improving teaching and learning whilst working with the subject teachers. These activities improve the curriculum for the students at Brockhill. Every subject area now has student voice representatives working together with staff, to enhance our college community.
Over the last few years we have been developing the structures of student voice to allow it to grow and become even more powerful. Student Voice is “important in helping us to become citizens who will then be able to contribute to society.” For us to reach our full potential we have to enjoy life and be successful. This depends on our democratic view being a thread all the way through our lives.
